Tehnički Indikator Indeks Relativne Energije (RVI) se zasniva na činjenici da je cena na zatvaranju obično veća nego cena na otvaranju na rastućem tržištu. Situacija je suprotna na opadajućem tržištu. Kao rezultat pomeraj indeksa je utvrđen pozicijom na kojoj je cena bila na kraju perioda. Da bi se normalizovao indeks na dnevnom trejding rasponu, promena cene je podeljena na maksimalno rastojanje cena u toku dana. Za detaljnija izračunavanja koristi se Jednostavno Prosečno Kretanje Cena. Period koji je najbolji je 10. Da biste izbegli moguće probleme potrebno je izgraditi dodatnu liniju signala, koja je 4-period simetrično ponderisano prosečno kretanje cena vrednosti Indeksa Relativne Energije. Signal za kupovinu ili prodaju je obrnut kada se linije međusobno ukrštaju.
RVI = (CLOSE-OPEN)/(HIGH-LOW)
Gde je:
OPEN - cena otvaranja;
HIGH - najviša cena;
LOW - najniža cena;
CLOSE - cena zatvaranja.
