Thursday, October 8, proved a real test of resilience for digital-asset investors. Bitcoin briefly plunged to $82,300 — a near-three-week low — and traded just under $83,000, down roughly 1.6%.
The move followed a classic "flight to safety" scenario: investors shifted capital from speculative assets to safer havens as oil prices rose and US Treasury yields jumped.
A worrying geopolitical backdrop triggered the selling that began on Wednesday. Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz intensified, and shipping activity fell to its lowest level in two months. When reports emerged that the US was considering further military action against Tehran, oil markets reacted immediately: Brent spiked above $101/bbl, and hopes of a quick return of logistics to pre-crisis volumes faded, according to The Edge.
But geopolitics is only half the story. US monetary policy is exerting at least as much pressure on the crypto market. The Federal Reserve minutes from the September meeting, released on Wednesday, revealed a hawkish tone among policymakers: amid persistent inflation, committee members are leaning toward tougher rhetoric.
Markets reacted fast. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury — a key global benchmark — jumped to a 24-year high of around 5.33%, according to TradingView and Stocktwits. The 30-year yield also hit record levels, approaching roughly 5.72%. A stronger dollar and higher rates make risk-free government bonds much more attractive relative to volatile, non-yielding cryptocurrencies.
The macro pressure triggered immediate liquidations: Coinglass reports that roughly $609m in crypto positions were wiped out on Wednesday. Details vary by source: LVRG Research's chief analyst Dan Hous says longs (bets on a rise) bore the brunt, while Stocktwits reports about $550m in short-position losses.
Still, experts are not in a hurry to bury the bull trend. "The drop in crypto prices is more a deleveraging of margin than the formation of a downtrend," Hous summarizes.
Altcoins and the broader crypto ecosystem were hit, too. Ether fell 2.2%, XRP slid 5.2%, and Solana dropped 3.3%, despite a high-profile announcement of a stablecoin partnership with Samsung Wallet.
Equities punished crypto companies too: in premarket trading, Bitmine Immersion Technologies shares plunged about 4.5%, Coinbase fell ~4%, Circle declined ~2.7%, and shares of Strategy (the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin) dropped ~3.7%. Notably, even Strategy's fresh BTC purchases earlier this week failed to turn traders' sentiment.
The year-to-date picture offers little comfort for optimists: since the start of 2026, Bitcoin is down roughly 6% and trades about 30% below its all-time high of above $126,000, reached in October 2025.
Apollo Crypto portfolio manager Pratik Kala warns that stormy turbulence will persist until a new positive catalyst appears.
"If we lose the $83,000 level, it's quite possible Bitcoin will fall back to the $78,000 zone, where meaningful support should be found," Kala notes.
Investors can only fasten their seat belts and watch Fed moves and geopolitical updates closely — they are now calling the shots in the crypto market.
